The Two Main Types of Electrical Discharge Machining
Using EDM
EDM is used by many industries to achieve a variety of shapes necessary for different uses or operations. There are two main types of EDM used to create many precise and complex shapes.
Wire EDM
In wire EDM, a wire electrode is inserted through the work piece or material. A computer is used to create pre-programmed cuts and craters through the use of electrical discharges. The electrode never makes mechanical contact with the material.
Drill EDM
In drill EDM, rotating concentric electrodes are used to drill through the work piece or material. A visible electric spark is produced, and the heat omitted is used to drill holes and create other shapes. Throughout the drilling, the electrode does not make contact with the material.
